Minzu University of China is located in Haidian District, Beijing, in which there are many universities and colleges. It is adjacent to the National Library to the south and Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park to the north. The campus is of distinctive ethnic characteristics with elegant environment, quaint and beautiful scenery as well as rich cultural atmosphere. The Communist Party of China first established a Nationalities Institute in Yan’an in September 1941 and then the Central Institute for Nationalities was officially founded in June 1951, which was renamed to Minzu University of China in November 1993.

Since its establishment, Minzu University of China has produced more than 100,000 graduates of various ethnic groups for the country. Among them, there are nearly 1,000 well-known experts and scholars, nearly 100 minority leaders and cadres at the provincial or ministerial level, nearly 1,000 prefectural leaders and cadres as well as tens of thousands of cadres at county level, all of whom have made outstanding contributions to the country’s national unity and development cause in their respective positions. Minzu University of China has become the cradle of training outstanding minority talents and national unity models.

The university now covers an area of 378,000 square meters, and has more than 3,000,000 volumes of all kinds of books and electronic books. The University Press is the publishing base for academic textbooks and works for ethnic minorities, with Journal of Minzu University of China and Journal of Research on Education for Ethnic Minorities being the national core journals circulated at home and abroad. Museum of Ethnography possesses more than 30,000 pieces of precious national cultural relics and has become the practice base for students’ patriotism education and teaching.

Since the reform and opening up, Minzu University of China has consolidated and improved the influence of scientific research through academic exchanges, has strengthened the stamina of scientific and technological research development through scientific talents project, and has enhanced the level of scientific and technological research work through the improvement of base construction and conditions. The university has signed cooperation agreements and has carried out substantive exchanges with more than 70 famous universities, such as Yale University, Columbia University, University of Rome, University College of Dublin, Boston University, Queen's University of Belfast, Humboldt University of Berlin, University of Paris 13, Seoul National University, etc. The university has initiated, organized or participated in the first National (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) Joint Conference for Principals of Teaching and Scientific Research Institutions of Ethnology and Anthropology, International Symposium on History of Qing and Manchu, and Chinese Forum of Ethnology and Anthropology, which have a great impact on the promotion of academic exchanges and research work of domestic and international related subject areas.

At present, under the guidance of Scientific Outlook on Development and in accordance with the strategic requirements of national economic and social development and the needs of national unity and development cause, all the faculty, students and staff of the university focus on the two major themes of enhancing the quality of personnel training and scientific research innovation ability, implement the three strategies of establishing characteristics, promoting quality and developing talents, unswervingly take the road of superior quality, principal connotation and sustainable development, and march towards the goal of renowned research-based top world-class university for nationalities with unique characteristics.
