Qingdao University, situated in the beautiful costal city Qingdao with the attracting scenery and amazing weather, faces the Yellow Sea to its south and gets Mount Fushan as its background. It is a university that features both profound culture and modern atmosphere.
Qingdao University, formerly known as the Private Qingdao University, was founded in 1924. The school has experienced the historical period of National Qingdao University and National Shandong University. Many famous educators, such as Yang Zhensheng and Zhao Taimou, and scholars, such as Wen Yiduo, Shen Congwen, and Liang Shiqiu have taught here. Zang Kejia, the well-known poet and Luo Ronghuan, a founding father of China have studied in the university. In 1956, the Medical School was separated from National Shandong University, and became an independent academic institution named Qingdao Medical College. In 1958, Shandong University was moved to Jinan, the capital of the province. Thereafter, it was approved by State Education Commission through the report of Shandong Provincial Government at that time to rebuild Qingdao University in 1985. In 1993, the former Qingdao University, Qingdao Medical College, Shandong Textile Engineering College, and Qingdao Teachers’ College were incorporated to Qingdao University. Since then, the university entered into a new development period.
Time is passing. Qingdao University, inheriting its fine traditions, stood at a new starting point and cast a new glory. Internationalization is one of its school-running orientations. In 1987, the school began to accept overseas students. It is one of the earliest universities with the qualification of accepting international students approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. It is also one of the universities in China with a large number of international students. Currently there are more than 1000 foreign students from 24 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Australia.
Qingdao University successively established the exchange and cooperation relation with 130 universities from 20 countries and regions, such as the USA, Britain, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Singapore and Israel. Sister-school Agreements have been made between Qingdao University and 40 of those schools. The university employs 62 long-term experts and teachers every year, and more than one hundred short-term scholars. The number ranks first among universities in Shandong province. Each year, hundreds of teachers and students are sent abroad for academic exchange. The international and open teaching pattern has taken the initial shape.
